The Phantom Docket

Every AI-fabricated case citation we’ve verified

Each entry below is a specific, named case citation that does not exist — invented by an AI system and filed in a real court, then caught and documented in a real sanctions, warning, or order-to-show-cause ruling. We list only fabricated cases that the underlying sanctions record actually names; many more rulings describe unnamed “nonexistent citations” we chose not to guess names for. Currently 22 verified fabricated case names, sourced from Citation Safe’s sanctions database and sanctions tracker.

Citation Safe checks existence, quote-match, and proposition support against primary sources before a citation reaches your filing.

This index aggregates fabricated case citations named in publicly reported court sanctions and warnings over AI-hallucinated legal filings. It is informational only, not legal advice, and not a complete record of every fabricated citation ever filed — only those a court's own ruling named explicitly. Corrections: /contact.
