This page is a plain-language summary of the limits of the Citation Safe service, operated by Digital Empire LLC. It supplements our Terms of Service; if anything here conflicts with the Terms, the Terms control.
1. Not legal, tax, or medical advice
Citation Safe (including Tax Cite Safe, Med Cite Safe, and FAR Check) is a citation-verification workflow tool. It is not legal advice, tax advice, or medical advice. We are not a law firm, an accounting firm, or a healthcare provider, and using the Service does not create an attorney-client or any other professional relationship. Verification results are informational aids: they tell you what we found (or could not find) in named public sources at a specific time. Decisions about your filing, return, report, or matter are yours and your professional advisers’. Human review of every citation is always required.
2. What our verdicts mean — and what they do not
Every result names the source checked and the timestamp. The verdicts are deliberately narrow:
- VERIFIED — we confirmed the citation exists in the named source as of the timestamp. It is not a guarantee that the citation is correct, current, good law, or appropriate for your matter.
- RETRACTED — the citation exists, but the source flags it as a retracted publication. It is never rendered as plain VERIFIED. A retracted paper should not be relied on without disclosing the retraction.
- NOT FOUND — the authoritative index for this citation type was reachable and affirmatively has no record of it. That is a strong signal the citation does not exist as written, but verify against the primary source before treating it as fabricated.
- UNCONFIRMED — we could not confirm the citation as cited (for example, the claimed case name does not match the case actually at that citation, or only a weak search was possible). This is not a claim that the citation is fabricated.
- UNCONFIRMED — OUTSIDE COVERAGE — the citation falls outside our machine-readable coverage map. This is not a negative finding about the citation.
- SOURCE UNAVAILABLE — our sources were unavailable when we checked. Re-run, or check the source directly.
Two rules we hold ourselves to in every result: we never label a citation “fake” — we report only what we could and could not confirm — and we never claim a citation is “verified correct” on proposition support. The proposition layer says a cited case appears to support a proposition, with a confidence figure. It is our evidence; the judgment call is yours.
3. Coverage limits
Our checks are only as broad as the public sources behind them. What is inside and outside coverage for each vertical is published at /methodology, with the live coverage map and measured error rates at /quality. Citations outside coverage are labeled honestly as such — never silently treated as NOT FOUND.
4. No warranty
The Service is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind, as set out in Sections 7 and 8 of the Terms of Service. Our one specific customer remedy — the automatic refund when a paid VERIFIED result is proven wrong — is described at /refund.
