Refund Policy
Version 1.0 · Effective July 15, 2026.
This page explains when and how Digital Empire Holdings LLC (“Citation Safe,” “we”) issues refunds. It is a plain-language summary of, and companion to, Section 5 of our Terms of Service. If anything on this page conflicts with the Terms of Service, the Terms of Service control.
1. The verification guarantee — automatic refunds
If we stamp a citation VERIFIED on a paid check and that result was wrong — the cited authority could not in fact be found in the authoritative source — the refund is automatic. There is no negotiation and no human approval step on the refund itself.
Here is exactly how it works:
- For legal, tax, and medical results, use the “Dispute this result” control on the verification card in your report. FAR Check (government contracts) results do not yet have an in-product control — email support@citationsafe.com with your report link (the
/v/<id>URL) instead, and a human reviews it under the same guarantee. - Filing a dispute immediately re-runs the check against the same source the original verdict used, including the same case-name cross-check where the citation type supports one.
- If the re-check confirms the original VERIFIED result was wrong, the refund for that payment is issued automatically through Stripe. The failure is also logged to our public error rate at /quality.
One refund is issued per verification (this is enforced in our billing system, not just promised). Refunds are returned to the original payment method; your bank or card issuer controls how long the credit takes to appear, typically 5–10 business days.
2. What the guarantee covers — and does not
- Covered: the fee you paid for the affected verification. That is the full extent of the guarantee; it does not cover consequential losses (Terms of Service, Sections 5 and 8).
- Not automatic: disputes where the re-check does not confirm fault — for example, a result that appears to need an upgrade to VERIFIED, or a re-check clouded by a source outage — are escalated for human review rather than auto-resolved. You will hear back within 1 business day.
- Not covered: results of UNCONFIRMED, NOT FOUND, RETRACTED, or SOURCE UNAVAILABLE. Those verdicts tell you we could not or did not confirm the citation — they are the product working as designed, not an error to refund.
For how each check is actually performed, see /methodology; for what a verdict does and does not tell you, see /disclaimer.
3. Subscriptions
Subscriptions are billed in advance and renew automatically until cancelled. You may cancel at any time and you keep access through the end of the period you already paid for. We do not charge cancellation fees. Cancelling stops future renewals; it does not by itself trigger a refund of the current period.
4. One-off document checks
One-off checks (for example the single-document tier) are delivered immediately on purchase. They are covered by the verification guarantee in Section 1 like any other paid check. If a one-off check fails to run at all because of a fault on our side, contact support@citationsafe.com and we will re-run it or refund it.
5. Fabrication Warranty
Paid Citation Safe subscriptions and paid one-off checks carry a Fabrication Warranty: if the Service marks a citation VERIFIED and that citation is in fact fabricated — the cited case or authority does not exist — Digital Empire Holdings LLC pays you $100 on the Solo tier ($29/mo) or $200 on the Professional tier ($79/mo). The trigger is our own mistake, not a court’s ruling.
- The Fabrication Warranty applies only to citation checks performed by users on a paid subscription tier or a paid one-off purchase. Free-tier and Deterministic-tier accounts are not eligible.
- One claim per account per rolling 12 months.
- Total Fabrication Warranty payments across all Citation Safe accounts are capped at $10,000 per calendar year. Claims exceeding the cap are paid pro-rata from the following year’s budget.
- A claim requires our logged VERIFIED response together with the citation ID, within 60 days of the verification event.
- The warranty covers only the existence of the cited authority — not whether it supports your legal argument or is otherwise good law.
- This remedy is exclusive: it replaces, and does not stack with, any other fabrication-related remedy for the same citation.
The Fabrication Warranty is in initial rollout. Amounts and the annual cap are subject to review upon completion of 90 days of operating data.
To file a claim, email support@citationsafe.com with your verification receipt (the /v/<id> URL or citation ID) and a description of how you confirmed the citation is fabricated.
5a. Tax Cite Safe, Med Cite Safe, and FAR Check — vertical warranties
Tax Cite Safe, Med Cite Safe, and FAR Check are separate product lines that are not currently available for general commercial purchase. No dollar-figure Fabrication Warranty and no Accuracy Guarantee is offered or in force for these verticals today. If and when a vertical launches commercially, its specific warranty will be published on its pricing page and cross-referenced here.
5b. Fabrication Warranty add-on (higher-cap, paid separately)
A separate, optional paid add-on offers a higher payout cap ($2,000) on the same fabrication trigger described above, for a $500/yr fee. Like the base Fabrication Warranty in Section 5, it is available only to paying subscribers, and any payouts under this add-on count toward the same $10,000-per-calendar-year, all-accounts cap described in Section 5. It is not currently accepting payment: its warranty terms are pending attorney review, and we do not charge for coverage that is not yet in force. See /sanction-shield/terms for the current status.
5c. Sanctions Guarantee (Solo/Professional/Suite All-Access and paid one-offs)
Paid subscriptions and paid one-off checks also carry the Sanctions Guarantee: if a citation Citation Safe marked VERIFIED on the qualifying check results in a court sanction against Customer or Customer’s firm for citation fabrication, Digital Empire Holdings LLC pays $10,000 per qualifying event. It is a limited, capped contractual warranty on top of the Fabrication Warranty in Section 5 — not insurance and not a substitute for E&O coverage. Aggregate cap $100,000 per calendar year across all customers; one claim per account per rolling twelve months; claim window 60 days from the sanction order. Full contract terms, eligibility, documentation, and exclusions (including the Layer-3 carve-out and the U.S.-only jurisdictional scope) are at /sanctions-guarantee. The Fabrication Warranty and Sanctions Guarantee do not stack — a single fact pattern that triggers both pays the greater amount, not the sum.
